The Heritage of Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club
The Golf Club is renowned for its superb course set in beautiful, natural surroundings and the famous golfers that have enjoyed playing the course.
The Club also has many amateur members who have distinguished themselves:
- In 1931 the Ryder Cup Team played a 36 hole competition (with the American ball!) at Brokenhurst Manor before sailing to the U.S.A. from Southampton.
- Henry Cotton who had three victories in the British Open in 1934, 1937 qnd 1948, recorded the then remarkable score of 62 that hit the national sporting headlines at the Club in 1939.
- Kevin Weeks, in 1987 won the English Championship and for two seasons played for England together with being Captain of the Hampshire County team.
- We remember Mike Smith 18 year old winner of the British Youth Championship in 1988, a great golfing talent, who was tragically killed in a car accident.
- In 1988 Kevin Weeks, Mike Smith and Nigel Graves (who also reached the semi-final of the British Amateur) won the Hampshire County team title. The BMGC team of Mike, Nigel and Chris Martin then went on to win the English Champion Club title and in November at Aloha GC in Spain Mike, Nigel and David Wheeler became the first English team to win the European Champion Club title.
- Club members have been selected for a very successful Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Island team. These include Jonathan and Martin Young, (who played for England in Mexico in 2003) and Jonathan Watt who at 17 was Captain of the Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Island Junior Team.
- The current Course Record is 63, jointly held by Justin Rose and Richard Bland, who both play on the European Tour with Justin spending the majority of his time playing on the U.S.A Tour.
- Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club Male members won England Champions Club title in 2007
- In 2008 Liz Bennett, member of BMGC, won the South Atlantic Ladies Amateur Championship and became the first British player to take the title since 1994.
